On October 29, 2018, it was reported that Dev Patel would make his directorial debut with an action thriller film titled Monkey Man. On March 12, 2021, it was announced that filming was completed and Netflix had bought worldwide rights to the film, described as "John Wick in Mumbai." However, Jordan Peele saw the film and, feeling that it deserved a theatrical release instead, later acquired it under his Monkeypaw Productions banner, which has a distribution deal with Universal Pictures.

Oscar-nominated actor Dev Patel is making his directorial debut with the action-packed revenge tale “Monkey Man,” which is being theatrically released by Universal Pictures on April 5. Jordan Peele produces the movie through his Monkeypaw Productions, and the film got its first trailer Friday morning.

Patel stars in the movie as Kid, “an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash,” according to the release. The film is inspired by the legend of Hanuman, a deity in Hinduism.

The logline says, “After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.”

Throughout the trailer, Patel beats his fists bloody, gets in car chases, stabs enemies with broken glass and breaks beer bottles on gangsters’ heads. As one unidentified voice says in the trailer: “Just one small ember can burn down everything.”
